De Young Properties Reflects on St. Jude Builder of the Year Award and Builder Summit!

De Young Properties team members recently traveled to Memphis, Tennessee for the 2022 St. Jude Dream Home® Builder Summit awards! At the 2022 awards, De Young Properties had the pleasure and honor of being recognized for the St. Jude Builder of the Year Award.

“We are humbled to be recognized with this award and to be part of the amazing work of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital as we are underway with our ‘Sweet 16” Dream Home. We share this recognition with our team, valued trade partners, media sponsors, volunteers and community,” said Brandon De Young of De Young Properties. “Together, we continue to make a difference in the fight against cancer because through the funds we’ve collectively raised, we have assisted researchers in finding more important cures It’s all for the kids!”

Along with the acceptance of this award, team members, Brandon De Young, Mark Thomas and Matt Hagan attended the 2022 summit at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital to learn of the research hospital’s newest research to find cures and save lives.

During their visit, Brandon, Mark and Matt had the opportunity to tour the research facility. The almost 66-acre campus consists of multiple buildings and research centers, and has 77 beds for patients requiring hospitalization during treatment. St. Jude is currently building additional housing outside of the campus and will house all families that will need to have an extended stay for outpatient treatment.

“The scale of its current facilities and the planned expansion for the hospital campus is amazing,” said Brandon De Young. “So many new state-of-the-art buildings and facilities; I was extremely impressed with the upgrades in technology throughout. I haven’t visited the hospital in eight years, so it was great to see how advanced the facilities have become in that regard. It really shows how impactful the money we raise together is!”

Along with a tour of the facility, the De Young team was able to talk and hear stories from patients, parents and siblings that are under the care of the St. Jude staff. The staff even shared their experiences from when they themselves were patients at the research hospital.

“When touring the Inspiration 4 Research building, one of the presenters was asked what made him want to work there. He proceeded to lift his pant leg to show us his prosthetic leg and let us know he lost his leg to cancer at the age of 13 while being treated at the hospital,” said Mark Thomas of De Young Properties. “No matter if it was a happy or sad ending to the care of their children, they all had an incredible drive to continue to raise the survival rate for future patients.”

Each De Young team member returned with a different outlook after touring the St Jude campus, its facilities and interacting with its staff.

“The trip to Memphis, Tennessee to visit the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital was a very humbling and eye-opening experience; the staff that we met was very informative, friendly and ready to answer any questions we had,” said Matt Hagan of De Young Properties. “The most impactful thing I will say, is that for any person or company that is on the fence about being a donor, I wish you could get a glimpse firsthand of the true reality of the St. Jude mission, the facilities, the work and the people. Then they would be 100% onboard after. I know I am! It makes me want to go 100% harder in my participation for the 2023 campaign.”

From product sponsors to the city of Memphis, everyone has a love and passion for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

“Hands down the most impactful item I took back from Memphis was the passion of the people. St. Jude/ALSAC employees, national and regional sponsors, builders, and even employees of The Peabody Hotel, all had a fire for the hospital,” said Thomas. “It would be hard to leave Memphis without your heart growing a little bit bigger from the love that was shared by everyone involved for the hospital and the St. Jude Dream Home®. Even when talking with the hotel staff, they had questions about the awards dinner and if everyone who attended were builders raising money for St. Jude. Little did they know that most of the over 40 markets that have St. Jude Dream Homes were represented in the ballroom. They got teary-eyed and said they could not believe that so many people would do so much for children they did not know.”
