If you’ve had the chance to peruse the EnergySmart page on our De Young Properties website, then you may have noticed our homes are built to the stringent California Advanced Homes Program (CAHP) Tier II level. This means our EnergySmart homes are between 30 and 40% more energy efficient than what our state energy code (Title 24) required them to be. Luckily for our customers, we’ve put together a great package of energy-efficient products that come with every new De Young home to save them money.
Since heating and cooling can account for almost 50% of your energy bill, it is important to use high-efficient equipment. We currently offer high-efficient Lennox condensing units (a key component of the cooling system) with up to 16 SEER / 13 EER efficiency. This quick explanation on PG&E’s website will give you a good idea of what that means. We also use a high-efficient Lennox furnace to be sure you’re not wasting energy to heat your home. This furnace has a very high 95% AFUE efficiency rating.
Also integrated into every new De Young home’s HVAC system comes an ECM, which stands for electronically commutated motor. As complicated as it might sound, its benefit is actually quite simple. The ECM allows the HVAC’s air handler to use much less electricity when it’s running. It also allows for much better air quality in the home by continuously supplying fresh air to the system and filtering it.
We look at our homes as a full system; every component of the home can affect another. This is known as the whole house approach. With that said, there are many other aspects of the home we focus on to ensure it is a miser when it comes to energy usage. From insulation and air sealing to windows and even appliances, there is a lot to discuss. Stay tuned for more posts on this topic in the future!
