May Is National Asthma & Allergy Month – Spread Awareness!

The month of May is recognized as National Asthma & Allergy Awareness Month. I’m sure those of you who have either asthma or allergies have been feeling it lately with all of this wind! According to the Central California Asthma Collaborative, 1 in 6 children in the San Joaquin Valley have asthma; the highest level in the state. It is peak season for asthma and allergy sufferers and a perfect time to promote education and support.

How can you get involved? How can we as a community make the Central Valley a better place for those who are affected by asthma and allergies? The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America shares 11 opportunities so people all over the country can participate in to honor people with asthma and allergies including awareness events, educational programs with training materials, and much more.

Here in the Valley, communities do their best to help with the air quality. Carpooling is recommended, wood burning is limited and daily air quality rates are shared on the morning news to educate viewers. Clovis Unified School District has become involved by including an air quality flag on their school flagpoles; ranking from Good (green) to Very Unhealthy (purple). This allows the staff, students and teachers to be aware of the air quality and to know how much time should be spent on outdoor activities.
